but i'm still feeling a bit of hibernation. don't you hate that feeling at the end of your "time off" when you realize that what you have left is so finite?? i don't really want to look at my rosters for my classes - or gather the supplies to do the demos.... i AM happy to be teaching beginning painting this quarter. and my design class is beginning too. there is something about students at the start of their journey. i like the wide-eyed look. not that there isn't something to be said for the dialogue possible with more advanced students, but there's this tinge of "the new" - an excitement when a door opens that i really like watching. let's hope it happens this quarter!!

maria spent the whole week reflecting on heroines. an idea i like very very much. funny thing was the other night hubby and i watched a ken burns documentary on the suffragists . how cool is elizabeth cady stanton?? [susan b. anthony is great too - but i'm not so fond of her collaboration with the more conservative - read prohibition - faction of the women's movement.] ms. stanton, though? so ahead of her time. so brilliant. i kept wanting to yee haw at her quotes.... and then i started to think about how women today really do take the vote for granted. it seems to many that many are satiated at "our" [womens] position in the world and how it still seems to me like true equality doesn't exist. i don't want to get on a soap box, but i was happy to return to my women's studies roots.... i think i will have to seek out some more info on ms. stanton.

above is another pairing from my recent polaroid play. i'm actually wondering what i'll be looking at as the season changes.... more sun! yay!

the living room is almost put back together.... curtains hung, furniture back in place.... need to hang some more art and arrange some knick knacks....

and anke i am actually almost done w/ your potholder!! can you believe it?? having time off is GREAT! BTW - just a week left to sign up for the music swap! on a funny side note... i think it's ALL women participating :) happy weekend everyone!!

"The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls." ~Elizabeth Cady Stanton...one of my favorite pearls of wisdom =)
Really like what you say here about womens roles and equality....it's something I think on often, and do tend to think the whole equality arguement is totally right on in reference to jobs, wages, treatment, votes etc etc.. but we do forget that men never did have it all..they went to work, earned money and came home, missing out on their childrens upbringing, and signing their lives away to the 9-5. Men never had the 'everything' that women expect to be able to achieve nowadays...which is why I don't expect/believe that I (women really..but thats inflamitory?) can ever have it all.

On a cheery note...LOVE the images today!! xx

While the mechanics of painting a room can be tedious, the well done finished product makes it all worthwhile. It is very satisfying to give a room a whole new lease on life!

love these polorids - the tiny car - spring peaking out of the side - your students don't know how lucky they are - ken burns tells an amazing story - don't really think about how far we have come as women everyday - how amazing that I work for a woman who owns her own business - strange little continued thoughts comment....glad that you had such a step away kind of break!

Yay! I'm getting potholders! :) Lisa, it is so incredibly sweet of you to use some of your precious free time on me!!! :)

Equality and womens liberation...I never thought about it this way, but Abigail has a point. Men don't have it all either. On the other hand they don't get asked about when they will have children in job interviews...get more money for the same job...usually don't get hired for their looks...and have to pay less at the hairdressers... Womens rights have come a long way, but the minds have to change too...that seems much harder.

I love the polaroids...the colors are just out of this world...dreamy, mysterious...so beautiful.

ky.... that is a PERFECT QUOTE! one to pin on the wall and hold near your heart.... thank you!

abigail.... there is SO much to consider. it is true that the expectations for men are just different. and dare i say that there are simply some differences? [rare is the man that can multitask the same way as a woman].... sometimes i think it's hard to even know what expectations are acheivable let alone desireable.... for me the show simply reminded me what we take for granted today - and what might still need fighting for! [woman president!!]

lisa.... then you shall!!

pat... so true! what's a little sore neck for a fresh non-dingy room!!

abby - i'd LOVE to have you in my class.... anyday.... if you want to spend 6 weeks in nocal for summer i'm doing summer school at UC berkeley... you could just audit! :) i DID get to the part of Susan B in the book... so funny :) and yes... optimism is sometimes much needed fuel....

wendy... i know... that's exactly what i was thinking... from second class citizen to owning your own business.... but then what? are things right? what else needs to give?? there's so much to think about!

lisa, I am LOVING these polaroid pairings!
Yes...absolutely Lisa, you are right! The U.S could benefit from a lady in the oval office..we have had Maggie Thatcher as Prime Minister after all... (and without her, the fashion for pussy bow blouses would have NEVER gotten off the ground!!;P).. who did a lot for the male/female balance over here..! xx
