mundane perceptions

rainbow mains

this is a photo from my trip. which seems like it was 3 years ago not 3 weeks ago. i spend a lot of time just looking for/at things - 1/2 the time i'm not even sure what it is i'm looking for until i spot it. i know i'm not alone in this endeavor. in fact alicia and heather have started a whole blog on noticing . and they are looking for participants next week .

i've been thinking a lot lately about what we notice. what seeps in through all the various filters and barriers that exist. how we process the bombardment of thoughts, images, sounds in our daily lives. what is it that makes us stop for 1/2 a second. or makes us smile.

yesterday i participated in cca's first year final reviews. and here's what stopped me... the idea of PUNCTUATION in art. what constitutes an exclamation point, a period, a question mark - and how do you insert and utilize those to the benefit of you work?

also the idea of intervention and art. or just the idea of intervention in general. like my photo. someone painted those water/gas/electricity mains in rainbow colors. i'm not sure if it's a coding system, or just because, or.... but it intervenes in how i normally look at industrial necessities.

anyway - i also have a question to pose - if any of you are up for answering. it's high time i re-vamp the portfolio section of my website . and i have a lot of work to add to it. right now i just put newer pieces up as i make them - thinking more about making them look nice on the page as a group of 8. but i'm starting to think it might be wise to have categories - at least in the recent work.... something like : tank installations : doily installations : domestic scenes : doily drawings : etc. any opinions?

i love noticing. friends/family in ny always get annoyed with me because i walk slowly looking up and around and they all walk super fast at that rush, rush ny pace.

i look forward to seeing your revamped site.

I think categories are a good idea. You have a variety of work and some people might pop by your site because they heard of your tank installations or something specific like that. It'd make it easier to find.

I like the idea of punctuation in art, as well. You could express such things in so many ways. A colour, a form, a certain line quality.

I should really take more 'notice', the beauty of life isn't hidden if you only stood still. * I think there should be an installation section on your website, will make things easier to find.

categories of your work would make it easier to find things....I would like that!

categories sound like a good idea to me. it's always interesting to see how artists label their pieces too.
And yes, noticing can make yourself a better person too. Noticing little life, efforts, details... It's good to notice :)

I've been following the noticing project as well and love the reminder to stop and really pay attention to detail throught my day.

I agree that categories would be a good idea. Your work has such nice continuity that however you arrange them I'm sure will be lovely!
hi lisa,
i've been thinking about a similar thing with my website recenlty as well.
for yours you could think of it like an outline; large catergories break down to smaller.
installations > tanks, doilies, etc.
works on paper > prints, drawings, sewn, etc.
i hope you'll notice with us next week! :)

Now that spring has sprung, I'm "noticing" so much more - like the sounds of birds chirping at 8:00 at night and how I missed that sound. Can't wait to start taking pictures of what I notice.

And I kinda like the sound of categories - for finding purposes.

:^)

Observing, watching, mulling things over, musing... I am forever sitting and looking or far, far away, lost in deep or silly thought. I like to sit and watch others, when I'm not working at home, to quietly think about where they might be going and to imagine what it might be like to be them. I'm also a fan of punctuation, though I use it rather dreadfully. I am always putting in more commas than called for.

Happy week to you, g xoxo

P.S. Great photo - that colour!

I wanted to leave an 'optical illusions' comment, but it didn't work - so I'm writing it here: I love it. Especially on the gray background. Hope you had a great weekend - everything starts blooming again over here too! XO

i think i will probably spend the rest of my evening thinking about punctuation in art. and reminding myself to notice the unnoticed. and wanting to paint our gas main pink.

marvelous. xoxo

I'm all for the indexing of your portfolio -- everything looks wonderful, and sometimes I can't get to see them all (or know what's in there because there's a lot of pages to go through...)

Perhaps start with the most recent ones? Or add a full list of categories of art you've made as a link list on the left most side (instead of page 1, 2, 3..).

Just my two cents! :)

Oh, I am slow as hell....!

A revamp! How exciting...yes, I think grouping and categorising would be perfect - and very you. Very in tune with the way you make, think and create. It would work beautifully with the natural rhythm of your pieces too - and extension of how you display them in galleries, on flickr etc.

Looking forward to seeing them all!! Happy May-day sweets, xo

Ahhh the dilemma of web-site categories. I think it's very difficult to categorise work. As soon as I ever decided on a category for my own work I then immediately realise that the same work would fit equally well in a different category.

Oh, and your work for the southern exposure's auction looks lovely. xoxolj

thank you for sharing the noticing blog... can't believe i missed that! so good.
i think what keeps me noticing is little bits of unexpected. and so i try, in noticing, to remember to notice the expected and everyday, and not the things that jump out... not sure if that makes sense but that's what's rattling around in my head :) xox
