unexpected

little buddhas with red caps

i was the unexpected guest today on sf girl by the bay .

i'm blushing a bit at the nice things that victoria had to say. and then i'm blushing at some of my silly answers to her questions. especially when i read martha's UE post or elisabeth's UE post or many of the other unexpected guests .

i do like seeing how someone else puts my life/photos together, though. and victoria is a master stylist....

above is an image of the japanese buddha souvenir i talked about. i can't believe it's from 2 years ago. i can almost still feel the burn from climbing all the stairs to see the nihonji daibutsu .

i've been thinking a lot about language. the little is really really trying to communicate. her vocabulary is slowly growing. i've told you about "out out". she also says "up up" a lot. almost everything with her comes in doubles. she's just starting to say more - "mo mo" and of course there is no - "no no" - complete with waving hand gesture. what is fascinating to me, though, is how many ways she can use her limited vocabulary to make me understand what she wants. "up up" - she says this while climbing up stairs : when she wants to GO upstairs because she's tired and ready for sleep : when she lifts something off the ground : when she wants the lid off of a jar or tupperware : when she wants me to pick her up or put her on the couch... i really wish i could understand her "gibberish" - she says "bye-bye" and then a whole slew of "words" when we say goodbye to the park, or to buses, or the outside - it sounds like the same sentence to me - i wonder what it means to her.....

p/s thanks for the tiny showcase support. in these economic times i'm happy that people find room in their budgets to support art. if you are interested, there are some prints left ....

happy week to everyone.

My senior year of college, I used to babysit twin boys who were about a year or so old, a couple days a week, for like half the day. They were on the verge of talking, but spoke the same gibberish. I was amazed that after a few weeks, we had complete understanding of each other. The non-verbal communication was amazing to me, and still was. The process of learning language and communicating is definitely and interesting one to watch up close.

Thank you for letting us see your home. You have so many lovely things there that give it such a warmth and personal touch.

The next few months of language, social, and physical development for the little will amaze you even more than the first year has. It is heartwarming to see how much you are enjoying the experience of parenthood.

I adore this post, Lisa.
The photo of the little Buddhas is gorgeous.
I find it interesting that they took so much time and care to dress each one up and place it just so...
I love to hear your musings about Motherhood.
:)
Hope you are having a lovely day, abby

Hee, hee... everything paired... I like this idea a lot. 'Up up' and 'out out' all doubled up for emphasis sounds charming. How quickly language develops is amazing.

Congrats on the unexpected guest feature. It was nice to see a little more of your nest.

Hey Lisa, so happy to run into your feature over on sfgirlbybay. You know I'm always a fan of your work. And it has been too long... congrats on the babe! Isn't motherhood a wild ride. I'm expecting baby girl number 2 soon. Let me know if you ever want to get together for coffee or a sippy cup. We're still in the neighborhood.

such a lovely post full of good things. i love that she's speaking in doubles, maybe for emphasis, or for spoken rhythm, or some secret of toddlers that adults are not supposed to know? okay, off to explore some of your links...
I enjoyed the Unexpected Guest post.

Maybe you should record some of the gibberish. It could be fun for you and your daughter to listen to in the future, one day when she's all grown up and the two of you are chatting over a bottle of wine.

Denise`s idea is a great one! Having raised a child myself I am amazed and sometimes distressed over how many of those little details like early speech I have forgotten. Taping some of her speech along with videos of her would make for wonderful times later on in life!
