lists and things

the other day i was feeling entirely overwhelmed with what i had to accomplish in one day [and on this topic have you seen frecklewonder's post on busy?]. i've given up trying to think about what needs to get done in any other increment than daily. i've been dabbling with keeping a to do list in my calendar book, or using teux deux but neither of those were working really.

a book of lists

so i decided to make a book of lists. my to-do list. daily. so i could cross things out [so satisfying] or carry things over to the next day. also a place where i could record silly events that happened that day - or places i went - or things that the little said to me [because she is SO funny with her talking these days].

a bookoflists 2

it's not anything fancy. sometimes i doodle. sometimes i don't. those of you who have known me for long enough know i like parameters and daily routines [ drawing a day anyone? i'm actually using the pens pictured at the end of that post for the book - a lot].

i guess i'll see if i can keep it up till the book is full? in general i love seeing lists and other people's ways/means of organizing or getting through their day.

there's this great book on lists [from an exhibition at the smithsonian] that i spied at sfmoma when i was there....

there's also this flickr group on lists, but it doesn't seem very active. i wonder if lists are going to go by the wayside as we get more and more integrated with our hand held technological devices.....

and in the studio ::::::::::::::::

a very small varigated doily

i finished this very small variegated doily to "float" above a painting i'm working on. it's crocheted with a 1.55mm hook and sewing thread. i guess i should be thankful that my eyes still work fairly well ! sometimes i wonder if there's a way to make them even smaller and more delicate.....

while making this doily i immediately thought of anne wilson's work.

anne wilson

i love her table top installations of weird interconnected thread like worlds. i was really sad a few years back when i had to miss her speaking on her work. i would have loved to hear what she had to say.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::

and in other news. i turn a year older this week. i don't have anything planned other than the hopes of getting more things crossed off my list. maybe some cake.

calder, hearts, and haircuts

remember calder

first off thanks for the MODify/d love. very kind of you all. i hope this turns out to be a fruitful venture that we get to keep working on. fingers crossed.

so i finally made it to sfmoma to see the calder to warhol fisher collection before it closes [tomorrow]. it's been embarrassingly too long since i've gone to that museum. i have to say i was kind of dying with curiosity over the fisher collection [founder of the gap] - knew it was huge. knew it had to have some good pieces in it.... i'm always wondering how people go about amassing a collection like that anyway. how does it reflect their taste, art trends, etc. etc?

as i wandered around i started thinking - why did they collect so many chuck closes and warhols [who i think is a genius, but they didn't have the best pieces] and only one figurative thiebaud ? where in the world did they house the stellas and polkes that are just SO LARGE [i this moment of panic when i realized that i haven't made any BIG work in awhile. it's not that i think bigger is better, but bigger does have a different impact]?

i just about DIED in the agnes martin room.... and the gustons killed me too. [i have to wonder, though - did they show them all together as the museum did? or were they scattered around in different buildings/areas]. and then this itty bitty calder made my heart stop. i'm not usually a huge fan of calder. i think he's fine, but he never gets me all teary eyed or excited. until now. this little wall mounted piece just really got to me. i wanted to take it home in the worst way. i can't find a photo of it anywhere online [darn you sfmoma], so i came home and did a really dorky sketch of it. it doesn't look like the above at all, but the above reminds me of it... so that will have to do...

what else happened this week?

doily heart commission

i finished a doily heart commission for a cardiac nurse ....

my mom celebrated her birthday [we went to the palace hotel for lunch. oooh fancy.] and stopped at the japanese sweet store across the street minamoto kitchen . if you want to pretend you are in japan for 15 minutes. go there. everything feels HYPER japanese.... i got this little treat to eat. [oh how i love mochi]

16 september

and.... i got my haircut [finally]. this is an out-take photo from the one i posted on flickr [the top of my head is cut off, so it doesn't really show the HAIR]. but i haven't said HI here in awhile so HI!

MODify/d

MODify/d

so here it is! the new biz i hinted to last week is..... [drum roll please!] MODify/d

my latest venture with my friend and partner Candice Gold. Candice worked in the high stakes NY fashion industry for years. we met over 10 years ago and consistently talked about doing something together that encompassed our values. she always hated all the waste that she saw in the garment business.... and i've definitely been on board with trying to re/use and be as eco-conscious as i can.... soooo.... last year we started thinking about how we could re/purpose and re/cycle damages, leftovers and samples - things that would normally be thrown away. we get oodles of stuff from white and warren and isda & co to turn into new stuff.

MODify/d

we've been making hats, fingerless gloves, pillows and endangered species stuffies ever since.... it's really fun to try and give new life to things. oh and i can mention that so much of what we work with is CASHMERE. ooohh ahhh soft and lovely.....

here's some other pics of what we do:

MODify/d - endangered stuffies

MODify/d - endangered stuffie

MODify/d - tweed pillows

MODify/d - dog bed

this bed isn't listed yet, but it will be soon.
